Raw violence along with explicit sex were gradually building up a diegetic tension. In front of the screen, a gritty take on a deaf younghood tied to a hopeless and chaotic future. Silence is required and thus, the spoken word is not needed in order to deal with similar experiences of the silent universe. Despite being aesthetically linked with Them (2006) and at some point emotionally colluded with Irreversible (2002), The Tribe stands alone as a film jewel by its own means. The attention is driven through empty and lonely aisles of the mind and guts. I walked away speechless.
Even New Yorkers stood in silence. Not even whispers were heard while watching strong and shocking sequences of The Tribe, Ukrainian Director Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy's Opera Prima and awarded with the 2014 Cannes Festival International Critics Prize. This was my feeling after attending a screening at Film Forum. Even knowing that the film has no dialogue at all, just sign language, grunts, moans and screams, it took me a pretty good deal of time to be swept away by its depiction of human decay and cinematic poetry.
Film descriptions and rave reviews aside, the story clearly confronts inner emotions deploying a minimalist and clever approach. As it turns out, everybody at the audience was grieving and suffering deep inside with its own demons and ironically wanting to shout out their reaction.
